Cape Cod Canal

Cape Cod CanalThe canal connects Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south. Although no longer than 7 miles, Cape Cod is the widest sea-level canal in the world.

It started being build in 1909, construction finishing in 1914, its width being doubled in the 1920s. 20% of the project area has been developed, adding roads, buildings, parking areas and other man made areas. Those that use Cape Cod to pass  save up to 135 miles of coastwise travel.

Cape Cod offers a large variety of opportunities for recreation. Fishing, bicycling, picnicking, shipwatching or hiking are one of the most popular activities, access being facilitated by parking areas and comfort stations.

There are many plant and animal species here, generally found more in the south.

The precipitation received yearly is enough to support forest conditions.
